If you are like most people, you probably have a sweet tooth. Unfortunately, as delicious as desserts can be, they are usually loaded with fat, sugar and a lot of calories. It is important to know when to eat dessert and what kind of desserts to eat. Dessert should not be an everyday staple (unless it is fruit salad). However, if you are going to eat dessert, make sure that you are consuming desserts of the highest quality — no Hostess cupcakes for you.
Desserts and sweet treats are often associated with happiness; we eat pie on Thanksgiving, cookies on Christmas, and cake on our birthdays. Not to mention the fact that the smell of cupcakes baking could make anyone do a dance of joy. The problem with this association is that the “happier” we become, the larger we become, and the unhealthier we become. The goal is to be happy without dessert, but to still use dessert for special occasions. The goal is also to find ways to make dessert untraditional and healthier. It is fun to create new simple recipes and you will feel so much better.
Because eating dessert has become an after-dinner tradition, most people reach for the cookies (or whatever else is around) after they have completed their meal. Research has shown, though, that sugar consumption not only does damage to our blood sugar levels and insulin production, but to our immune system as well. Dessert consumption on a regular basis will most definitely result in weight gain and, before you know it, not only will you be overweight, but you will be sick a lot too.
Redefining the idea of dessert ‘is’ easy. If you are one of those people who must eat something sweet after a meal, make that something sweet a piece of dark chocolate or a piece of fruit. Have a handful of chocolate chips and some raisins — the combination is sweet and delicious. Once you begin finding healthier ways to eat dessert, you will feel so much better and it will become a habit.

Try re-creating one of your favorite recipes for your friends and family to enjoy. Use healthier sweeteners and sugar-free chocolate chips. Get creative with your sweet treats; buy your favorite frozen yogurt, cut up a banana, and make your own chocolate syrup for a new twist on a banana split (which would normally cost you about 555 calories … yikes!)

- Cut out desserts for one week. Once eating dessert is not a habit anymore, you will not crave it as much.
- When you go out with friends, decide to split a dessert instead of each having one to yourself.
- If you are going to treat yourself to dessert, make sure it is a dessert you really love and that is of the highest quality. Go to your favorite bakery or bake something for you and your friends to enjoy
- If you are having a chocolate craving, have a piece of high-quality dark chocolate, rather than a slice of chocolate cake
- When eating a dessert, practice eating small portions

- Try cutting up an apple and sprinkling some cinnamon on it for an after-dinner treat or a mid-afternoon snack
- Make a huge fruit salad and garnish it with low-fat yogurt and coconut (especially good if the fruit salad contains pineapple and/or banana)
- Find a good quality frozen yogurt (try Stonyfield Farms brand) and buy your favorite flavor.
- Make progress one step at a time; if you like pie, eat pumpkin pie (which usually has less calories) and hold the ice cream. Or, if you like cookies and you usually eat 3 at a time, make sure you only eat one.
- Stay away from candy and candy bars
