melslife is not a baby site. We are a wellness or healthy living community, but we care about people, and babies are precious little people.
The bond between a parent and child is probably one of the most cherished human connections we can experience. We want to take care of our children, love them, and admire them. Why would we do anything to harm our children? Unfortunately, most parents don’t realize the environmental and nutritional dangers that surround us in our homes and food. They include:
- Lead poisoning
- Polluted water
- Radon gas
- Air pollutants
- Toxic toys and art supplies
- Toxic yard chemicals
- Food additives and pesticides
- Shampoos
David Steinman & Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, in their book The Safe Shopper’s Bible (which I highly recommend), note, “There will always be honest differences of opinion in science especially in the evaluation and interpretation of information about short-term and long-term health effects arising from chemical exposures such as allergies; eye, skin, or respiratory irritation; cancer; nervous system damage; and birth defects.” We do not want to get into the middle of the debate between traditional care for your baby and a more holistic way of raising your child. That choice is yours. melslife is here to point out some of your alternatives or options.
melsRules:
- Always consult your pediatrician before doing anything
- Prior to changing or introducing anything new to your baby, many experts have what they call the “four-day rule,” which is exposing your baby to something for four straight days to determine whether or not he is allergic to the new food. For example, when introducing new foods, feed your baby this same food for four days before adding something new
- Hygiene – always wash your hands, wear clean clothes, and cook and eat in a clean environment
- Avoid infections
- Have a prenatal game plan – get care early
- Avoid drugs, alcohol and smoking
- Avoid x-rays, hot tubs and saunas
- Exercise (under your doctor’s care)
