High Cholesterol: Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits & Vegetables

What you eat can have a profound effect on your cholesterol level.  Nutritionists believe that a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol-lowing foods and supplements may help lower your bad cholesterol as much as any statin medication.

The best fruits and vegetables to reduce cholesterol are apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, chili peppers, citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables (like spinach), broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, legumes – lima, kidney, navy, soy, lentils – and orange and yellow fruits and veggies like apricots, papaya, pineapple, sweet potatoes, mangos, corn, pumpkin, sweet peppers, tomatoes of any kind and carrots.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in dietary fiber and phytochemicals. You should be consuming at least 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.  If this sounds like a lot to you, do not worry.  Adding fruits and vegetables to every meal or eating them as snacks is easier than you think.

Fruit is nature’s candy.  Once you discover how delicious fruit is, you won’t be able to stop!  Vegetables are wonderful because you can cook them so many ways or simply eat them raw.
